Daily hugs are good for your health!

Hugging is comforting, it also holds many health benefits…

“We need 4 hugs a day for survival. We need 8 hugs a day for maintenance. We need 12 hugs a day for growth.” Virginia Satir, Family Psychotherapist

Most of us like a good hug, however not many people realise how beneficial it is to our health to give and receive regular daily hugs. It’s recommended that 8 to 12 hugs a day can seriously improve well being, among other benefits…

Communication

A hug transcends communication by speech. Holding a loved one close can comfort, reassure and show that you love them.

Boost the immune system

The gentle pressure on the sternum when hugging, apparently stimulates your thymus gland which promotes the healthy production of white blood cells.

Reduce feelings of isolation and loneliness

Hugs can boost oxytocin levels, which heal feelings of loneliness, isolation, and anger. Oxytocin decreases the level of stress hormones so it’s a great way to feel better really quickly.

Reduce blood pressure

If you have a high blood pressure, get those hugs in as hugging can help you feel more calm. Just 10 seconds of hugging a day can help reduce blood pressure!

Happiness and emotional well being

Hugs simply make us feel good, it’s a way of connecting and feeling the flow of life. We all love a nice hug. And if you don’t, maybe you’ve not had enough of them, so get hugging today!

Hugs help with dementia care

It’s easy as a carer to be task driven when caring for a loved one, as there is so much to think of and do. Hugging your loved one regularly can help in all of the same ways as above.

In addition, hugging can help to decrease pain, improve mood, and decrease the heart rate.
